ART WORKSHOP THE FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE

I am offering a unique 7 day workshop in the French Countryside in the first week of September 2018.

We will be staying at a beautifully renovated private country home located in the medieval village of La Charité-sur-Loire.

Some of the highlights:

Daily Plein Air painting.

- Morning private vineyard tour of the surrounding Sancerre area, afternoon painting plein air in a private organic vineyard.

- Saturday morning farmers market, afternoon painting still lifes of our purchases.

- Picnic lunch on the bank of the Loire River, afternoon painting plein air.

- Visit to the French village of Vezelay, lunch in the village, afternoon plein air painting.

- Small group of 3-4

- Gourmet French meals prepared by renowned chef.

I will be giving daily demonstrations using watercolour and pastel. You are free to bring your favourite medium.

La Charité-sur-Loire is a two hour train ride south of Paris on the Loire River.

This is a gold leaf diptych in progress in my studio. It has few more steps to go and it will be ready to have a resin finish applied.

Here I am in the studio applying the finishing layer of resin to a Gold Leaf Diptych. I am using a blow torch to cover every inch of the surface to eliminate bubbles and create a mirror like finish.

Emily Carr Live Model Sketching - Class 6

This is class six of my Pastel course at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. It is the first time I have done a live model class (I won't count the one class in design school many years ago). We had a series of timed sketches. Starting out with 30 seconds which seemed impossible to capture anything. I was only able to put down a few strokes. Progressing to 60 seconds which was a little better. Then 5 minutes, which felt like an eternity. Then onto 10 minutes, when I could start to make sense of the figure and get a bit of shading and contouring. Each time the model assumed a different pose, so it was always starting from scratch. Short bursts of concentration trains the mind to capture the essence of the pose. No time to ponder, no time to correct. Just carry on. A good lesson for life also. These are 6 of the 45 sketches I completed in a three hour class. The total concentration required was exhausting but exhilarating. I will do it again!

Emily Carr Pastel Course - Class 1

My new Heilman pastel box loaded with Terry Ludwig, Unison, Mount Vision Thunderstorm Greys, Cretacolor Carre, Girault and Diane Townsend pastels. 

This is the first class of my venture into the world of pastel painting at Emily Carr University Vancouver. It is a new medium to me and this is an experiment to see if I like it. So much to learn about pastels. I love the beautiful colours and the immediacy of this medium. We spent the first class getting used to different papers, line strokes, how to apply pressure and shading. Our subject was an apple. Quite basic, but profoundly complex at the same time. I can better appreciate the art of still life painting now-it's all about capturing the essence. We were instructed to concentrate on value, line strokes and composition.
