Vancouver Yaletown Penthouse

FAMILY FRIENDLY PENTHOUSE
This is a penthouse project for a couple with two small children in Yaletown, Vancouver. It has a fantastic view that was a little overwhelming when I started on the project. There was nothing to keep your focus inside the space. I decided that I needed to be bold in my choice of finishes.

I grounded the space by adding teak panelling to the raised ceilings to mirror the teak of the floor. The furnishings and accessories were kept to a minimum to not detract from the view. The finishes had to child friendly. The dining table and countertops are Caesarstone, which is virtually indestructible. The dining room chairs were upholstered in white leatherette. The chairs are studded at the top of each leg. The chandelier was picked for its fun and whimsy. The sofa is real leather and the area carpet is wool from Belgium. The ottoman is upholstered in Cashmere, which isn't exactly child friendly but my client fell in love with it.

The back wall of the cooktop is a wonderful piece of Granite that I hand picked from the supplier, and it was with much difficulty, that they were able to install it as a slab - in one piece with no seams. It weighed approx. 600 pounds and had to be taken up to the top of the building. It looks fabulous, and hangs on the wall like a magnificent piece of artwork. I also wanted to use warm colouring & natural products to connect the space with the earth energy. The colour of the granite picks up the colour of the teak and has these beautiful charcoal grey veins running through it. I matched the paint and carpet colour to this gray veining in the granite to further accentuate the granite. The effect is better when you are in the space. You feel like you are on top of the world but at the same time the space is very warm and enveloping. The clients are happy with the end result and they are finding it family friendly and good for their frequent entertaining.

Beautiful Kitchen Design Ideas for the Heart of Your Home

Thank you Amara for the write up on my Vancouver kitchen design!

“We love how the Macassar ebony creates a dramatic backsplash and is used to frame the integrated fridge and plumbed coffee machine. Starphire glass is used as a backsplash behind the cooktop and the floating stainless steel shelf creates a convenient storage and display for dishes. Task lighting was also incorporated into the shelf. The mirrored wall above the shelf creates depth and reflects light. Corian countertops are used. We like to design kitchens with a 39” counter top height (against the standard 36” height) as we find this more ergonomic. Commercial grade appliances are by Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele and Asko. The island also features a warming drawer.”

Custom leather swivel chairs by Patricia Gray Inc. The clients' Noguchi coffee table was re-purposed as an end table, signature lighting fixture from Spain and a beautiful view makes the perfect corner for morning coffee and reading the newspaper.
The space where the sofa sits was previously an unused guest bedroom. By removing the wall between this room and the before cramped living room, we were able to double the living space and increase the outstanding view of the Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park Marina and West Vancouver mountains.

Let There Be Light

imageHave fun with accent lighting. Finding just the right lighting is one of the most difficult things for me as an interior designer, but when it happens it is magic. I think of the room as the perfect little black dress with the perfect cut, the one that dresses up or down according to the occasion, and the perfect lighting fixture is the jewelry that finishes off and compliments the little black dress.
imageI have written an article for West Coast Homes and Design, a supplement in the Vancouver Sun Newspaper,on how the right lighting is one of the most important aspects in achieving atmosphere in a home. Lighting is a discipline all to itself and often is one of the most important parts of an interior. Bad lighting can ruin a good interior: good lighting can almost salvage a bad one. For example….. (more)
image
In kitchens it is particularly important to get the lighting right as food preparation along with the eating and social aspects that go on in this room are a vital part of our lives and involve all of our senses. Kitchens need to be well lit with good overall ambient lighting and task lighting over islands and countertops. Add a little fun and pizazz with accent lighting as I did over this island.

image
Lighting in a bathroom and bedroom needs to make you feel refreshed and energetic in the morning, ready to face the challenges of the day ahead, but at night should engender a feeling of relaxation and harmony. In a bathroom, good lighting for putting on make-up should come evenly from either side of the mirror so shadows are not cast on the face. The rest of the room needs to be lit evenly from overhead, but be careful of placing recessed pot lights that are directly over your head when standing in front of a mirror or else you will have shadows under your eyes. I put the lights for the make-up lights and the overhead lights on different switches to further enhance the options to create different moods.

Left: Wall mounted LED swing-arm lamps were used in this bedroom for task light.
Right: Candles can add to the mood and ambience in a room and make a dramatic statement.
