Let There Be Light

imageHave fun with accent lighting. Finding just the right lighting is one of the most difficult things for me as an interior designer, but when it happens it is magic. I think of the room as the perfect little black dress with the perfect cut, the one that dresses up or down according to the occasion, and the perfect lighting fixture is the jewelry that finishes off and compliments the little black dress.
imageI have written an article for West Coast Homes and Design, a supplement in the Vancouver Sun Newspaper,on how the right lighting is one of the most important aspects in achieving atmosphere in a home. Lighting is a discipline all to itself and often is one of the most important parts of an interior. Bad lighting can ruin a good interior: good lighting can almost salvage a bad one. For example….. In kitchens it is particularly important to get the lighting right as food preparation along with the eating and social aspects that go on in this room are a vital part of our lives and involve all of our senses. Kitchens need to be well lit with good overall ambient lighting and task lighting over islands and countertops. Add a little fun and pizazz with accent lighting as I did over this island.

Lighting in a bathroom and bedroom needs to make you feel refreshed and energetic in the morning, ready to face the challenges of the day ahead, but at night should engender a feeling of relaxation and harmony. In a bathroom, good lighting for putting on make-up should come evenly from either side of the mirror so shadows are not cast on the face. The rest of the room needs to be lit evenly from overhead, but be careful of placing recessed pot lights that are directly over your head when standing in front of a mirror or else you will have shadows under your eyes. I put the lights for the make-up lights and the overhead lights on different switches to further enhance the options to create different moods.

Right: Candles can add to the mood and ambience in a room and make a dramatic statement.

  15. I love stylish lighting, wish I had something a bit more exciting than the standard lampshade hanging from my ceilings! I might have to suggest those hanging bulb lights to my boyfriend for our new kitchen design, although not sure they'll fit with the rustic/Victorian look he's going for...

Loved the article in West Coast Homes and Design. I definitely agree about lighting selection often being one of the most challenging aspects of the design process. It always seems to be that one last finishing touch that we and our clients seem to struggle to find balance with.

  20. Really like your presentation on lighting, and I totally agree it can have a profound effect on the success, or otherwise, in finishing a room and creating the ambiance or feel required. Personally I like what you have achieved in the bathroom example, the blinds add a bit of drama with the external natural light percolating through in blazing horizontal lines, whilst the thought you have given to the positioning of task lighting is often overlooked - how often spotlights are positioned directly over mirrors I would not like to guess, but certainly I think it might be why my own reflection in many mirrors is not as 'cover page' as would like - that's my excuse anyway.

  22. Hi Patricia,

I am in love with good light. I seek it out all the time since my photography is made with glass and light. I used to love the different lighting created at the theatre and that was one of my favourite things about it. Good lighting is amazing. Thank you for the advice. Frances

  27. Great to see a blog about the importance of lighting. It really does affect the mood and furniture in a room.

I've seen some of the most beautiful grains ruined by poor lighting, and yet have also seen some awful grains made to look wonderful through great lighting.

Lighting is so important, yet it's often overlooked or simply installed just because someone likes the idea of a spotlight rather than the affect it gives!

  30. Your comments along with the images shows how thoughtful you need to be when deciding on lighting for a room. The aesthetics are important, but as you suggest it is also essential to think about what you are doing in the room, what the lighting is for, and what effects the lighting needs to have. Great resource!

I adore those glass pendants over the kitchen counter! They really are like jewelry.

As much as I also like the use of the candles on pedestals, I am hoping they are electrified for safety due to the proximity to the draperies...?

(BTW, I've tried commenting both with Wordpress and OpenID and my blog's url, and it keeps showing "Anonymous posted..." in the preview; I'm not sure how this is going to actually post.)
