Contemporary Designer Recliners

Orbit Recliner
Orbit  Contemporary Designer Recliners

I am not usually a fan of recliners.  The traditional overstuffed giant recliners tend to be a white elephant in a room.  So needless to say  I was very happy  while researching seating for a media room to come across these contemporary well designed recliners in the UK.  They describe this recliner as: "One of their best selling recliners which reclines, swings, swivels and orbits to your desire"....and it claims to be "seriously comfortable".

The mechanism for these contemporary designer recliners operates by leaning back on the chair and using your body weight to hold back.

What do you think?
Would you have one of these seriously fun contemporary designer recliners in your home?

  1. Finally some recliners with style! But it still looks to me like sitting on a plane, I would prefer a nice chair and an ottoman or a chaise longue, less adjustable but much more elegant. Anyway it is great to see an effort to improve something usually so ugly.

Well somebody had to do something. I've never liked any recliner, but the hubs INSISTS on one. There was no getting around it. For awhile he was content with the mission style recliners of the early 90's, and that was somewhat acceptable at the time (but I'm not crazy about that one either - don't like mission style). But in the end the comfort level was unacceptable to him. Now I have a monstrosity in the middle of my living room, the largest puffy leather recliner available from Lazy Boy. It's made for XL men, which my hubs is not, and towers above all other seating in the room. But that's what felt comfortable to him. If I could find (and afford) a recliner that was truly attractive to my standards and truly comfortable to his, I would be very happy. Being forced to accept a hideous recliner in the public seating area in the home is a common sorrow among many, many women.

  3. well, it's better, but there is still the taint associated with recliners in general that somehow i just can't get past. had a client *insist* on one once, and was lucky enough to find a vintage milo baughman-esque chrome armed number that he could live with, and didn't make me want to lose my lunch.

thanks for giving me another option for the next time a client insists...

  4. I've always hated the lazy boy type recliners. These are actually somewhat stylish, but I still don't care for them.

I myself was no a recliner chair person but I must say, " See what a good design can do"?

I think that is a lovely idea. I would have one of those.

    Thanks for your great info.

  10. I work with reclining furniture alot in my space planning...to use it properly is an art, really!
Look into the Terra, Eva, Riley...all high leg recliners from www.Lazboy.com
This one is crazy cool wish we had this one in our line up...sigh...

  11. I chanced upon to view your blog and found it very interesting. Great ... Keep it up!

  12. These recliners are fun and nice looking - I have been looking for recliners or comfortable chairs for a home-theater and it is not an easy task - I found something decent through American Leather but I have to say these ones are fun and the lines are very clean and contemporary.

We need to forward this entry to LAZYBOY maybe they will get the hint (lol)

  13. I have to be honest, I don't find these very attractive, but I suppose they would work in a hip media room. I know the other choices (the La-Z-Boy style ugly overstuffed recliner) is a lot worse!

I still think a better-looking recliner for media rooms must exist. I have a traditional armchair in my living room which is a recliner and it looks like a regular chair. Of course, it isn't the overstuffed, sit for 3h media room variety, but it is possible to make a nice comfortable recliner that doesn't look awful in a room!

Maybe I would like the ones you showed if the fabric choice was better!!

  14. Hi Brillante
I agree with you that I usually prefer to use nice chair and an ottoman. But there are times when this isn't always possible.

  15. Hi Maison
Your "vintage milo baughman-esque" recliner sounds wonderful. I'd love to see a picture of it.

  16. Hi Wind Lost
I agree with you about the choice of fabric. I was going to mention that in the post, but neglected to. Glad you brought it up.

Thanks for all of your comments. I am always excited when I find a 'fresh' exciting design.

  17. Wow a recliner that "can do" the shape reminds me of the tea cup ride at Disneyland. Cute, round and mobile what's next? Great post!

  18. Personally I would prefer a wing chair with an ottoman, but this recliner is quite funky. Not like the ugly La-Z-Boy.

I can't see these working in my house, but i know there is a place for them out there. A much nicer option if you do need a recliner. Great find!

  20. I must say I'd go for an ottoman and cozy chair first - I don't love all the mechanism showing, just like in a traditional recliner. This one - I don't know - looks like it's trying too hard.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What a brilliant recliner. It looks great, and I'm sure it's super comfy!

    ReplyDelete
  22. If given the space and the choice of my fabric, I would prefer a chair and ottoman also, sometimes a male will prefer the recliner.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I found out recently that there is harware to have custom recliners fabricated. Thought it was a lovely idea.

Love the round shape of these, and agree, the fabric could use an upgrade...I can imaging them in a linen or nice chenielle from Lee Jofa.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I like this round design but do agree a fabric make over would make them all the better. Great find.

  30. Glad to see that our homegrown designers are succeeding. Althoughu the fabrics are rather bold for my liking, I like the space-age quality of them and think these will appeal to young loft dwelling types or those in need of witty comfy furniture.

  31. This is absolutely fantastic! Will I be able to get one in the US anytime soon? Amazing piece of furniture!

  32. Wow, this recliner is seriously cool! I like recliners but never cared for the fact that most recliners are pretty ugly. I would totally get a recliner like this though. Very cool.

recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

  38. Finally, sleek recliners that don't look like crap!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I enjoy your blog immensely. These chairs are styled pretty well for the photos. But to me they are entirely too "barrel" shaped and inelegant, no matter how much damask is used in upholstering and how many Manolo's the model wears!

I do like the functionality...swivel, etc, which is wonderful in small, multi-use spaces.

These could work if done in shades that make them disappear as much as possible into the decor of the room....

    thanks for excellent blog!

  40. This is the first time i would entertain the notion of using a recliner...so fun, sio young and spirited. Love them Thanks...

  41. Thank goodness you found these! These are recliners that I would definitely put in my house.

  42. The whole idea of a recliner is something I always hated, but I must say you made me change my mind (a bit....)
    Thanks!!!

  43. Part of me does like the look of these recliners but I did laugh at the first comment. Not sure which airline they fly on but it's obviously not in club :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm with you on recliners, although these are kind of cute! It's like a puzzle that pulls apart really. But, I'd still have to think twice before designing this into a space... perhaps for a young couple?

    ReplyDelete
  45. When I think of recliners, I think of the traditional, black leather recliners. These are actually stylish stations you can enjoy your favorite show on.

  49. Hi Patricia,
This is so funny that I read this today. Yesterday, I found a picture of my husband in a recliner, & I hated it!! I hurried & hid the pic. so my daughters boyfriend wouldn't see it. I HATED recliners. I LOVE the compfort but not in my home : )
*his mom passed away shorty after she bought it. How could I refuse it. It went in a back room. we still joke about that chair. I felt bad, but they just look trashy no matter what you do with them.
Really... I am surprised we can't figure it out. These here today have come along way & are fun for that look.still screams recliner, & thats just how it is I guess, no getting around it.
I could say I wish someone focused on designing an elegant & French recliner, but Im not sure I would buy it anyways. : )
Maybe dark leather & more compact when needed for media purposes???
They are getting better, I suppose.
    Thank you again for sharing.

Hello Patricia, thanks for a great blog! Being a keen reader of what goes on in the world of design, instead of doing a lot of design these day (three kids and a small publishing company to run) I appreciate your reports of the current situation.

As a thanks for keeping me in the game I would like to send you the notebook "DESIGNERS I MET AND LIKED" from our family company.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That recliners seems to be the best recliner ever... it does not look too bulky and pretty much does everything what a recliner should do... looks really cool to have one.
