COCO Before Chanel is a new movie by Warner Bros just released in Vancouver. Coco Before Chanel stars Audrey Tautou, the French actress, who I love best in the movie Amelie. It was shot in Paris and Normandy. Many decades ago André Malraux predicted “From this century, in France, three names will remain: de Gaulle, Picasso, and Coco Chanel.” Not even the mythomaniac Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel could have anticipated how her legacy would persist triumphantly into the next millennium. I, for one, am going to be first in line at the box office for Coco Before Chanel. I will take my classic Coco Chanel handbag (which I bought in Paris when I was studying Interior Design) with me to the show.

In character as Coco Chanel, Audrey Tautou reclines in the designer’s private apartment on her famous voluptuous
suede sofa, above her Paris couture salon. Karl Lagerfeld made her classic Chanel suit specially for the film Coco Before Chanel.

The Chanel logo is an overlapping double 'C' - one facing forward and the other facing backward, and comes
from the name Coco Chanel. "Coco" is the nickname frequently used for Chanel founder, Gabrielle Chanel.

  1. I think it is a shame that some of the most famous people in art never knew the magnitude of their success and their effect on poeple !!
Will wait to see this movie. Whether its fashion, art or interiors I beleive great minds of design meet at so many points.

  2. Most of the grand couturier lost their identity by being taken over by star- system-declared-designers . most of the time ,they chose new-money-no-class over chic and elegance, business is business , but when one of them had a "homeless-inspired" collection at the price of an Airbus , French started to be realy annoyed by that freak ,who's not even french ! that brand became a Bimboo type fashion and no more the Shrine of elegance .
Chanel ,thanks god !remain intact and above all , I wish Lagerfeld live for ever .
he is working on it .

  3. oh, i can hardly wait for the set design!!!!

  4. Patricia my Dear,

I will definately put on my Chanel heals while heading off for this film when being launched here in Sweden, I so hope it won't be much later than April.

Chanel shoes are by the way the most comfy ones, heals or flats. I adore them......always my first choice.

Can't wait to see what interiors of this film look like!

    All the best,

  5. How exciting...another film I will have to own, just to gauk at the set.

  6. Oh, Patricia! I can't wait for this movie to come out!!!!! Even though I can't afford a Chanel bag (just yet), I love the buttery soft leather, the classic quilting, and superb craftsmanship of their bags. And the clothes...just to die for! To this day, somehow, I still associate Chanel clothes to the roaring 20s. KL's has done a great job upholding the House's identity. Who will replace him when he retires? We can only speculate...

  7. Thanks for this heads up! I hadn't heard about this movie - but am now terribly excited! The set, the scenery, the fashion! Oo la la!

  8. I cannot wait for the film! She was such a fascinating woman. I look forward to the styling of wardrobe and interiors.

  9. I will look forward to this movie!! The sets and costumes will be amazing!! I have always loved their classic design. And I remember sneaking a spray of my Mom's Chanel No. 5 in the square black bottle. : )

  10. In honour I'll wear Coco parfum and Chanel's Exaltation lipstick when I go to see it, I can't wait

  11. Heidi25/2/09

Thanks for news! Can't wait to see it!

  12. Thanks Patricia for the news.
I love everything about Coco Chanel, her "pink" is the most refined and subtle.
A courageous woman who, during the great Depression opened her first shop, now legendary,at 31 rue Cambon.
    She had No fear!
P.S. I agree totally with Zelda comment

  13. That is a beautiful white suit! The only Chanel thing I own is a pair of gold (costume jewelry) clip earrings from the 80's. I look forward to seeing it!

  14. All I can say is Audrey Tatou is the luckiest girl in show business. Amelie was lovely, and I saw a couple of her other films but cannot recall the name. Now the DaVinci movies. And to be so famous and live in PAris and get to be Coco! I am so jealous...

Can you imagine how beautiful this movie will be - clothes, interior design. Theatres will be full of us decor and fashion junkies!

  15. Fun! I am sure is going to be an interesting film. I can't wait to see it.

Last year I wrote an entry on her honor.

Also back then I found a cool youtube video of her apartment in Paris

  16. I have always adored CHANEL and when years ago, I splurged and bought a black CHANEL suit which looks as good today as it did. Respect for the fabric, the execution and the fit is genius. Now I am eyeing a small CHANEL bag for Spring.
Lagerfeld recently was quoted -"Let's stop worrying about the economy and keep moving." I like his spirit
    and his designs.

  17. The set overflows with the feel of 'old money' - class, worldly elegance, sophistication, comfort and eclectic. I love it. I adore this actress.

  18. oh, i just cannot WAIT for this movie to come out! for many many reasons, i think coco was such an amazing woman, and i adore audrey too. it's going to be fabulous!

  19. I so look forward to this movie!

  20. Audrey was so wonderful in Amelie - can't wait to see this!

  21. I am looking forward to seeing this version... love Audrey Tatou!

Has anyone heard when the new Coco Chanel movie will be in the States?

  28. Coco Before Chanel -- I just saw it -- Great Movie

  29. I just watched the movie on my flight back from London. Even on a small screen it was so pleasant that I watched it again (partially, before sleeping). I found Tautou just a little "static" though but I should watch it again on a big screen. Interesting story behind the scenes of an iconic figure of last century.
    (P.S. welcome back Patricia!!!)

  30. I'm just happy to see a new post from you! I know we have exchanged emails but it's nice to see you here in blog land this evening.
I'm adding this movie to the list of films that won't make it to Lexington.boohooo. Still no Valentino either. So I will buy them & have them to enjoy over & over.
    Great to hear from you!

  31. Super excited to see this, definitely one to purchase! I am equally excited to see you blogging again, I have missed your consistently top notch posts.

  32. P,
i hope all is well and you are super busy with clients, and
that's why you haven't posted lately.

  33. For me the word Chanel is about the colour red. I loved how she finished her 'look' with her classic Premier Rouge red lipstick. Once, I was so bold as to own a RED COUCH and I'm sure it was inspired by my love for Chanel red...

PS I'll be at the movie wearing black with my Rouge Hydrabase Coco Red Lipstick on... (same lipstick I'm wearing in my picture at my website)

PSS Nice to see you back Patricia.

  34. Patricia...so glad to see your post! I will look forward to the movie...may need to gather a few friends and have a girls night out!

  35. I haven't seen the film yet, but I've been in the "coco chanel suite" at the ritz hotel, paris, where she spent her final years. If you liked Amelie, Patricia, you may be interested in a lovely animated version of the movie's theme song, 'comptine d'un autre ete l'apres midi', by jann tiersen. Just google the following to find it: "The Piano - Amazing Short". It's a heartwarming piece on You Tube, 2 min. 22 sec. Cheers, Pam Evans.

  36. I saw the movie this past weekend and loved every minute. The chateau, the scenery, the acting all were great! Loved the ending with the gorgeous fashion show!

  37. I have seen the movie about two weeks ago, absolutely beautiful! The story, the costumes, the settings, gorgeous! I will see it again, as soon it's out on DVD!
A couple of years back there was a another Chanel movie, anybody remembers? Her story and the story of the House of Chanel is incredible!
Audrey Tatou is such great fit...
    edgy, beautiful and smart!
    SEE IT!

  38. I am so happy to read you again! ;)

I loved her apartment in Paris -

  39. How i love Audrey Tautou! She gets better and better with every movie..I have to do a movie-weekend of her movies sometime! who's in? :)
